[8th grade creative writing]
He sits at his computer in darkness, the only light coming from the glow of the screen. A mix of shadow and light, his face is angular, the sharp line of his brow carving into the top of his jawline. His fingers fly across the keys with rhythmic tempo.

Suddenly a knock from the darkness behind.

The clicking keys stop and silence joined the darkness. His face, illuminated from the screen, is the only thing in that great emptiness of light and sound. Again the knock, this time louder, more urgent. Immediately the screen goes black, plunged into darkness. There is a sudden explosion of sound as feet scuffle, papers are moved, things are thrown into disarray. And then, just as quickly, there is light again. This time the curtain from a nearby window is thrown aside and the light from the moon fills the dark room.

Knocking again. This time he looks back at the direction the noise came from, just one last moment of hesitation before he is out the window and down the fire escape.

The door collapses from the final blow, slamming to the ground, splashing dust everywhere.

Silence.

And then, almost as an afterthought, the shadows in the doorway begin to lengthen ever so slowly, gaining mass with each passing second. They bloom across the floor and from the walls, inky pools of shadow race across the room and fill each corner, searching. They pause at the computer and desk, shiver for a moment, and then resume their spread. Only after the room has been covered in darkness does he enter. He seemingly floats over the ground, a long coat drags on the floor. He glides into the room, face expressionless, never changing.

he sniffs the air and smiles.

I've added this excerpt for all of the fans and critics of my 8th grade creative writing class sample (thanks for caring)

Alright, so writing isn’t the easiest of professions, but it is one of the more exciting, I believe. It is funny to sometimes take time to look through my old manuscripts and see how I’ve grown as a writer. Even though I haven’t been exhausting myself writing day after day, I can honestly say that my integrity as an author has grown considerably. I can remember when the only print that interested me was fantasy and hard science fiction. I liked to read about epic adventures and action packed scenes of battle, love and loss. Now, I’m not so much into reading for the “quick fix” as I call it, but rather, I’m looking for something hidden in each author’s work. You see, the first step to expanding yourself as a writer is to expand yourself as a reader. The best writers in the world have learned from the master’s of the business, other writers. Certainly, it does help to take a class here or there in fiction fundamentals, how-to create more in-depth plot lines and believable characters, but common sense is extremely underrated. Many of the 'master authors' today learned their tricks and their skills from reading other great authors, just as painters often feed off of one another’s styles and creativity. Once you have opened your horizons as a reader, you can begin to see the true author inside of you begin to take shape. It may be one that does enjoy writing about epic adventure, love and loss, but it could also be the author that intrigues his readers with subtle language, impressive characters, and stunning dialogue. It really depends on which type of writer YOU would prefer to be. The choice is not between which pays better, but between which gives the author more satisfaction.

Writing is not about getting published. Although many would argue my thoughts, I believe writing is an art form and a tool for each and every one of us. Some use writing as an outlet, a way to banish the demons inside of themselves. Others use writing as a creative spigot, pouring their minds out on paper instead of canvas. And still others use it to make and shape stories that come to life in a different and unique way in each and every person who reads their words. All forms of writing are a special and unique connection between author and reader, because although you may read the same words in a book that others around the world read, the story in your mind is yours and yours alone, a unique gift from the author to you, and that is the most special part of all.
